The NJ Bikeway Grant Program awarded the county $914,000, was the second largest of 14 granted to a mix of counties and municipalities in NJ.

Projects are awarded on a competitive basis taking into consideration new bike miles created, safety, connectivity, service to public, Complete Streets Policy and equity criteria to benefit low-income and minority populations.

“We are very pleased that the Murphy Administration has seen fit to fund this excellent project,” County Executive Tom DeGise said in a statement.

“The new protected bike lanes created on Duncan Avenue will be a welcome addition as we continue to improve and expand our green-focused footprint adjacent to Lincoln Park and our Skyway Golf Course in Jersey City.”

The bike lanes will be constructed on Duncan Avenue from Route 1 & 9 to the Hackensack River. They will provide a connection between the bike lane on Duncan Avenue in Jersey City and the future greenway to be constructed along the Hackensack River.

“Greater pedestrian and bicycle access, especially access to public green space and future job centers that these bike lanes will provide, aids us in reducing our collective carbon footprint and increasing opportunity for all our residents,” added County Executive-elect Craig Guy.

“We are glad to be local partners in the governor’s statewide vision on these issue–ones that truly matter to so many of our residents.”

The Bikeway Award will be incorporated into the County Engineering Division’s capital budget, allowing final construction designs to be completed by spring and opening of the new lane in the Fall of 2024.

  1. That’s good news but there’s a need for law enforcement as food delivery drivers use the bike lines on electric bikes BACKWARDS!

If you tell them they are going the wrong way; they curse you out. There’s going to be a serious accident or worse due to the arrogance of now simply using the bike lane for the appropriate direction.

    • Never going to happen. No matter what the law is if it is not enforced it doesn’t exist and Jersey City doesn’t have the manpower or will to enforce restrictions on any kind of bikes.

      • Maybe with the lack of will by officials but a little effort would go a long way. A few of these restaurant delivery people stopped and ticketed would get around quickly and then restaurants would tell their drivers to drive in the correct lane. How hard is that?

  2. This has been A NIGHTMARE since the day they started on Duncan Ave!! My car was parked within this new parking formation & got totalled by hit & run driver within 2 weeks!! There’s been quite a few accidents of different situations besides mine which was the worst! People fly up and down Duncan Ave all day & night long so making the driving lanes even smaller is only making it more DANGEROUS! Nevermind the fact that people are still riding down all over the street on bikes &scooters not using the bike Lanes!!They took away so much parking and offered no prior notice of the changes to be made. If only they had cameras to catch the person who left us without a vehicle.
