Derek Booker, 39, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault and resisting arrest, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Booker was taken into custody around 4:36 a.m. from the area 41st Street and Broadway. Officers responded to the area on a report of a dispute and encountered him irate and behaving aggressively.

As officers were attempting to investigate, Booker threw an object at the officers and exited the apartment. While in the hallway outside of the apartment, Booker punched an officer in the face.

After deploying a short burst of pepper spray, officers were able to subdue Booker and attempted to handcuff him but he resisted. Officers were ultimately able to place him into custody without further incident.

Booker was transported to the Bayonne Medical Center to be evaluated and treated for OC exposure. Three officers also had to be treated for minor injuries sustained during
the incident, police said.
