The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office and Bayonne Police Department are investigating a fatal stabbing that occurred earlier this afternoon.

“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Bayonne Police Department are investigating a fatal stabbing on Avenue C near 54th Street in Bayonne in which one person was killed. More info to follow,” the HCPO tweeted.
Wednesday at 10:49 a.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez provided new information.
Yesterday, just before 3:30 p.m., members of the Bayonne Police Department responded to 1095 Avenue C between 53rd and 54th Streets on reports of a stabbing, Suarez said in a statement.
Responding officers found a male victim in the building vestibule with multiple stab wounds. The victim, later identified as Mathew Mortimer, 29, of Bayonne, was transported to the Jersey City Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.
Mortimer was pronounced dead at approximately 4:15 p.m. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Bayonne Police Department are actively investigating this case. No arrests have been made at this time.
