State Senator (D-31) Angela McKnight is highlighting a bill package aimed at protecting senior tenants by making housing applications available by mail and email, requiring lobby security for certain buildings, and establishing a fee cap for replacement keys.

“We cherish our older community members, and as they age, we must do all we can to support their needs. Not every senior has family members or caregivers to help them navigate this stage of life, which can bring safety concerns, financial challenges on fixed incomes, and difficulties adapting to new technology,” McKnight said in a statement.
“These bills address all three of these common barriers to independent living, helping seniors spend less time stressed and more time enjoying their lives and remaining active in their communities.”
Bill S-3998 requires senior housing applications to be made available by mail and email, while Bill S-3926 requires lobby security for certain senior citizen high-rise buildings in areas with high violent crime rates.
Finally, Bill S-3787 establishes a fee cap for replacement keys and key fobs in subsidized senior housing.
McKnight added that these related pieces of legislation will help ensure that senior housing addresses the specific needs of New Jersey’s seniors.
The three bill were all referred to the Senate Community and Urban Affairs Committee back in March.
The new bill package comes after McKnight introduced a seven-bill package to protect tenants and enhance safety standards in March, as HCV first reported.
