Union City Police Officer Edward Romero was suspended for 12 days in 2024 for violating the department’s extended sick leave policy, according to their annual major discipline report.

“On 11-29-2023, a convalescence check was conducted on the officer for being on extended sick leave. The convalescence check was conducted after the officer failed to update the Chief’s Office on three separate dates, in violation of the departmental Extended Sick Policy,” the incident description says.
“At the time of the convalescence check, the officer was not present at his place of
convalescence when the visit was conducted. P.O. Romero subsequently received a 12-Day Suspension.”
No other major discipline was reported by the Union City PD for last year, though Police Sgt. Ruben Rodriguez was suspended in January for filing a false report about being assaulted back in August, as HCV first reported.
The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has mandated that all law enforcement agencies post their annual major discipline reports online by January 31st every year after the records became public for the first time in June 2020.
Many still just submit to the AG’s office through an online portal and the state’s annual database has also not been updated with each department’s most recent major discipline report yet.
