On January 11th at approximately 2:21 p.m., a school bus driven by a 71-year-old woman, of Guttenberg, was traveling northbound on John F. Kennedy Boulevard when “she felt an impact on the front of the school bus and immediately stopped the vehicle,” the report says.

She told police that the child quickly ran in front of the bus and she therefore was not able to see him. The driver refused medical attention on the scene.

The officers “observed the 3-year-old child on the ground bleeding from the mouth, with a large bump on his head next to the rear passenger side tire” and also noticed scrapes on his hands, with his jacket and scarf torn apart due to the crash.

As a result, the Jersey City Medical Center was notified and responded. The victim was immediately treated and transported to the hospital, accompanied by two police officers.

EMS initially deemed the injuries life threatening, but he was eventually determined to be in stable condition.

The victim’s grandmother, 43, of Jersey City, told authorities that “she lost control” of her grandson right before he ran in front of the school bus, Police Officer Michael Velez wrote in the report.

A passenger who was riding the bus informed police that she saw the grandmother “suddenly let go of the child” while crossing in the middle of the street, adding that they were not using the crosswalk.

As part of the investigation, police reviewed surveillance video footage from a nearby towing shop, which corroborated the bus passenger’s account of what happened.

Additionally, officers contacted the New Jersey Department of Child Protection and Permanency (DCPP) and a case was generated to the central office in Hudson County.

All bus passengers refused medical attention and the victim’s belongings were placed into evidence, according to the crash report.
