The Hoboken Police Department closed a section of Hudson Street to investigate reports of a man with a weapon this morning, officials said.

“Police activity in the area between 5th to 6th on Hudson Street. Please avoid the area while our officers investigate,” the Hoboken PD tweeted just before 9 a.m.

About a half an hour ago, the City of Hoboken clarified that authorities were looking into reports of man with a weapon, though did not specify which kind.

“Please continue to avoid the area of 5th & 6th on Hudson St. as Hoboken PD is currently investigating the reports of a male with a weapon,” they wrote.

This afternoon around 3 p.m., Police Det. Lt. Jonathan Mecka explained that a resident was arguing with a construction crew when someone allegedly flashed a rifle.

“The dispute involved a resident of that block and street a construction crew conducting work on Hudson Street. The dispute was over what time street construction began. During the dispute it was alleged that a rifle was shown,” he said in an email.

“The Hoboken Police Department responded and promptly made the area safe. They along with the Hudson County Swat Team were able to make contact with the suspect who willingly surrendered. The Hoboken Police Department does have one person in custody at this time.”

He continued that the investigation is ongoing and further information will r released when possible.
