Staten Island man charged with crashing stolen car during police pursuit in Bayonne

A Staten Island man is charged with crashing stolen car in Bayonne on Saturday after police began pursuing him and he refused to stop, striking several vehicles waiting at a red light before hitting a traffic light pole.

Tyzay Leecraft, 23, of Staten Island, New York, was charged with receiving stolen property,
eluding, and eluding resulting in serious bodily injury, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Leecraft was taken into custody at approximately 8:24 p.m. on Saturday from the area of Route 440 North and Pulaski Street.

The NYPD notified the Bayonne Police Department that they were in pursuit of a stolen motor vehicle as the pursuit entered Bayonne from the Bayonne Bridge.

The stolen vehicle, operated by Leecraft, struck numerous vehicles as the driver attempted to pass the cars as they were stopped at the traffic light at Route 440 and Pulaski Street.

As a result of the collisions, Leecraft lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a traffic light post, causing it to crash down to the street.

He was taken into custody and processed accordingly. Several occupants of the struck vehicles reported injuries to their head and neck areas, authorities said.
