“I am proud to have secured over $1.8 million in Safe Streets and Roads for All grants to keep pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers safe on streets in Newark and Jersey City,” Menendez said in a statement.

“The Biden Administration and House Democrats continue to deliver for our district, including on these important safety initiatives that will benefit our residents.”

In Jersey City, $1,000,4000 will be utilized to initiate supplemental planning studies, including a lighting study, an analysis of traffic signals, and an inventory of sidewalk conditions.

Additionally, this grant will facilitate studies exploring potential reductions in speed limits, improvements in managing loading zones, and the introduction of innovative safety technologies.

The funding will also facilitate demonstration activity testing safety improvements for bicyclists along Ocean Avenue.

As for the $800,000 going to Newark, they will use it to conduct planning and demonstration activities to create temporary bike lanes, modify road structures like medians and bulb-outs, and conduct assessments to ensure road safety adheres to established standards.

Furthermore, it will support consolidating Newark’s various safety plans into a unified Comprehensive Safety Action Plan, streamlining efforts for a safer city.

“The integration, synchronization and efficiency of intracity traffic impacts all aspects of life in Newark, from auto and pedestrian safety to environmental health,” added Newark Mayor Ras Baraka.

“This generous grant not only gives us access to state-of-the-art technology and advanced programs and systems, but it gives us the advantage of streamlining a complex web of safeguards into a single Comprehensive Safety Action Plan. We are grateful to Congressman Rob Menendez and the Department of Transportation for their ongoing attention to the wellbeing of Newark and its people.”
