“6,500 32BJ SEIU commercial and school cleaners in New Jersey have been negotiating for a fair contract over the last two months. The contract expires on December 31st and an agreement has yet to be reached!” Hudson County Executive-elect Craig Guy wrote in an Instagram post.

“In order to show their employers that they will do what it takes to win an equitable and just contract, cleaners are getting ready to authorize a strike. Cleaners are essential workers. They deserve great wages and benefits for all their sacrifice and hard work! That’s why I stand with @32bjseiu fighting for a strong contract and #buildingjustice”

32BJ SEIU Vice President and New Jersey State Director Kevin Brown wrote on Twitter that thousands of commercial cleaners gathered to demand a fair contract that includes fair wages to keep up with inflation, healthcare, stronger pension, paid time off, and anti-discrimination protections for immigrants and people of color.

“I’m incredibly proud to stand with @32BJSEIU and our commercial building cleaners, which includes those who work in Hoboken, as they fight for a fair contract from building owners,” tweeted Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla, also and 8th District congressional candidate.

“Fair wages, reasonable healthcare, and paid time off, among others, is something that ALL workers deserve, let alone essential workers who are the backbone of cities like Hoboken!”

Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea (D-2), also a declared candidate for Jersey City mayor, indicated that if the union ends up striking, he will be walking with them.

“I passed a resolution calling on the companies to negotiate a fair raise pension and health benefits 2 months ago. Today I support @32BJSEIU ’s strike vote and pledge that if there is a strike I will be walking the line with them!” he tweeted.

Just minutes ago, Gov. Phil Murphy (D) said in a Twitter video “it’s time to negotiate in good faith.”

Other local dignitaries in attendance today included Hoboken Council President Emily Jabbour, Hoboken 5th Ward Councilman Phil Cohen, Assemblyman-elect John Allen (D-32), and Jersey City Ward E Councilman James Solomon.
