Prosecutor: 3 Jersey City men charged with shooting 5, killing 1

Three Jersey City men have been charged with shooting five, killing one, in an incident that occurred just over three years ago, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

Lamont Wiggins,  25, Sheldon Mays, 23 and Jermaine Jennings, 22, all of Jersey City, are each charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder and  four counts of attempted murder, four counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon (handgun), and possession of a weapon (handgun) for an unlawful purpose, Suarez said in a statement.

All three defendants face additional charges for criminal activity between May 2020 and August 2020.

Wiggins and Mays are additionally charged with gang criminality and unlawful possession of a weapon (handgun).

As for Jennings, he is also charged with possession of a weapon (community gun) for an unlawful purpose, gang criminality, use of a juvenile in the theft of an automobile, corruption of public resources, and unlawful possession of a weapon (handgun).

Wiggins and Mays are currently in custody at the Hudson County Correctional Facility on unrelated charges, while Jennings is currently in custody at McKean Federal Correctional Institute in Pennsylvania on unrelated charges.

The three defendants were indicted by a Grand Jury on the above charges on Thursday, June 29th.

On June 20th, 2020, at approximately 12:20 a.m., members of the Jersey City Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Union Street between Martin Luther King Drive and Ocean Avenue.

Upon arrival, responding officers found multiple shooting victims.

One of the men, later identified as Scott Colclough, 34, of Jersey City, was found with multiple gunshot wounds.

He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 12:37 a.m.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office determined the cause of death to be gunshot wounds and the manner of death to be homicide.

Four other victims were found in the area with various gunshot wounds and they were all transported by EMS to Jersey City Medical Center where they received treatment for their injuries.

Suarez credited the HCPO Homicide Unit and the Jersey City PD with the investigation and arrest.
