Once officially in service, the Arthur E. Imperatore will offer leisurely excursions in addition to providing reliable commuter transportation.

“As a leader on sustainable operations, we are proud to add the Arthur E. Imperatore to NY Waterway’s clean ferry fleet,” NY Waterway CEO Armand Pohan said in a statement.

“It was Arthur Imperatore’s bold vision that resulted in the transformation of the Weehawken waterfront and revitalized ferry passage across the Hudson. It is only fitting that this great new ship should bear his name.”

Imperatore was also the president of the company and served in the top leadership role until he passed at 95 years old in November 2020.

Built locally by New Jersey-based Yank Marine in Tuckahoe, the Arthur E. Imperatore is a brand-new, low-emission 2,000-horsepower, Tier 3 compliant ferryboat designed to carry 600 passengers. The ship has a service speed of 21 knots.

The vessel is 109 feet long and 32 feet wide and draws just six feet of water depth, reducing the need for dredging near piers.

This is the second time in recent memory that New York Waterway had a christening on the New Jersey side of the river, with Lt. Gov Sheila Oliver (D) attending the debut of the Susan B. Anthony ferry back in July 2019.

The event will take place at Monday at 11 a.m. at 4800 Avenue at Port Imperial in Weehawken.
