Jose Bonano, 22, of Newark, was charged with aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, according to Police Lt. Eric Amato.

Bonano was taken into custody around 10:45 a.m. on Saturday from the area of 1st Street and Kelly Parkway. Officers responded to Lord Avenue on a report of a fight where one individual was in possession of a knife.

The 30-year-old male victim reported that Bonano began a verbal altercation with him while the victim was speaking to another resident of the apartment he was visiting, authorities said.

The argument continued outside of the apartment complex and became physical when Bonano punched the victim in his face. At that point, Bonano then produced a knife and attempted to stab the victim in the face but was unsuccessful, officials said.

Bonano then fled the scene, but was apprehended by police in the area of West 1st Street and Kelly Parkway shortly thereafter.
