Police: Man who fell asleep while illegally parked in Bayonne caught with handgun

A man who feel asleep in his car while illegally parked in Bayonne was caught with a semi-automatic handgun, police said.

Kamol Thomas, 30, of Jersey City, possession of a large capacity magazine, unlawful possession of a firearm, and possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Thomas was taken into custody at about 3:47 a.m. yesterday from the area of 33rd Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. An officer on patrol in the area observed a vehicle illegally parked.

As the officer was investigating, he observed the driver, later identified as Thomas, asleep in the vehicle. The officer was able to wake Thomas and began speaking with him, asking him for driving credentials.

Thomas did not comply and continued to be very uncooperative with the officer.

As the officer continued his investigation, a .40 cal semi-automatic handgun equipped with a fully loaded large capacity magazine was retrieved from the center console of the vehicle, leading to his arrest, authorities said.
