Luis Medina Fernandez, 29, of Newark, was charged with tampering with public records and unlawful possession of a weapon (baseball bat).

On Friday, March 8th at 10:39 a.m., during a motor vehicle stop, Secaucus police arrested Fernandez after an officer observed his vehicle with no license plate while on County Avenue, Miller told HCV in an email.

The officer walked to the rear of the vehicle and observed a large box holding the license plate with a black mesh covering commonly used in conjunction with an electronic button that the driver activates to conceal the license plate from public view.

“These license plate concealment devices are commonly used by criminals to conduct crimes and to evade toll fees at various bridges, tunnels, and toll roads throughout the region,” Miller added.

“A metal orange Easton baseball bat with a black handgrip was seen on the floorboard near the driver’s seat, presumably for self-defense.”

Fernandez was issued his complaint summons, along with three motor vehicle summonses, and he was released from police custody.
