Stephen Pierce, 54, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Pierce was taken into custody at about 8:42 p.m. yesterday from the area of 22nd Street and Avenue E. Officers responded to the area on a report of two men fighting.

Upon arrival, they were met by the 31-year-old victim who stated that he was just assaulted with a knife by Pierce. According to the victim, while taking out the trash, a verbal altercation ensued between him and Pierce.

During the argument, Pierce brandished a knife and swung it at the victim twice. Pierce then put the knife in his pocket and the two men became involved in a brief physical altercation before both parties returned to their residences.

An on-scene investigation resulted in Pierce being placed under arrest and no injuries were reported, authorities said.
