Peter Depalma, 56, of Bayonne, was charged with driving while intoxicated, refusing to provide a breath sample, careless driving and leaving the scene of a motor vehicle crash, according to Police Lt. Eric Amato.

Depalma was taken into custody around 8:47 p.m. on Sunday on East 24th Street after being identified as the driver who struck a decorative lamp post on East 21st Street, police said.

Officer were able to follow an oil trail from the crash scene, which led them to Depalma on East 24th Street – who was parking his car, officials said.

The vehicle displayed “fresh front end damage” and an investigation determined that he was the one involved in the accident. Depalma refused to submit to a breath test to determine his blood alcohol content, authorities said.
