Jancarlos Rivera, 18, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault with a weapon,
recklessly endangerment, criminal mischief, possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a handgun, according to Amato.

Additionally, two 17-year-old male teenagers, one of Bayonne and one of Newark, were each charged with possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a handgun.

The teenager from Bayonne was also charged with receiving stolen property, while the teenager from Newark was charged with aggravated assault.

The above individuals were taken into custody and charged accordingly resulting from an investigation into a shooting incident reported on August 20th at about 1:03 a.m. in the area of 21st Street and Avenue E.

On that date, officers responded to the area on a report of multiple shots fired.

According to witnesses, three individuals were observed possessing and/or firing handguns at each other in the areas of East 21st Street, East 22nd Street, and Avenue E before fleeing in different directions.

None of the individuals involved appeared to be struck by any gunshots but a parked vehicle and an area business sustained damage from the shots.

The Bayonne Police Detective Bureau immediately launched an investigation into the shooting, identifying the three individuals possessing and/or firing handguns.

This investigation determined that Juvenile 1 and Juvenile 2 were on board a Hudson Bergen Light Rail train arriving at the 22nd Street platform.

Juvenile 1 then exited the train as Juvenile 2 remains on the train and continues to the 34th Street station. Upon Juvenile 1 exiting the train at 22nd Street, he encountered a group of individuals whom he and Juvenile 2 have had prior feuds with.

At that point, Juvenile 1 removes a handgun from his waistband and fires shots at the group before fleeing the area. The involved group also disperses, only to return to the area with additional individuals.

At this point, Juvenile 2 also returns, via light rail, to the area where he encounters the group in the area of 22nd Street and Avenue E. Juvenile 2 then brandished a firearm from his waistband and points it in the direction of the group but does not fire the gun.

In response, Rivera removes a firearm from his waistband and fires multiple rounds at Juvenile 2 before all involved individuals flee the area. The shots fired by Rivera struck and damaged a parked vehicle in the area and a front window of an area business.

On August 22nd at 1:31 p.m., detectives located Rivera in the area of East 25th Street and took him into custody, charging him accordingly. The handgun he used during the shooting was not recovered.

The following day at 2:54 p.m., Juvenile 2 was taken into custody from his residence where detectives were able to locate and recover the 2 handguns used by Juvenile 1 and Juvenile 2 during the shooting incident; one 9mm semiautomatic handgun and one 40 cal semiautomatic handgun.

Additionally, it was also determined that the 40 cal. handgun that was possessed and fired by Juvenile 1 was confirmed stolen out of Norfolk, VA. Juvenile 2 was processed on a summons with a future court date.

Prior to the shooting incident, Juvenile 2 was identified as the actor of a reported motor vehicle theft on August 2nd from the area of 10th Street and Broadway. On August 29th, Juvenile 2 surrendered himself at police headquarters and was charged with the theft.
