Paterson man, 46, arrested for fatally shooting Union City man, 33, authorities say

A 46-year-old Paterson man has been arrested for fatally shooting a 33-year-old Union City man in the Silk City on Friday evening, Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia Valdez and Paterson Police Department Officer-In-Charge Isa Abbassi announced.

Alexander Gutierrez, 46, of Paterson, has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a handgun and possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, authorities said.

On Friday, February 16, at approximately 10:42 p.m., Paterson Police Department patrol units were advised by a witness that an individual was shot inside of a residence.

When police arrived on the scene, they discovered the victim, identified as Logan Gonzalez, 33, of Union City, with a gunshot wound to his lower back.

The victim was transported via ambulance to Saint Joseph’s University Medical Center in Paterson, where he was subsequently pronounced dead at an undisclosed time.

The investigation revealed that Gutierrez was in possession of a revolver handgun and shot Gonzalez. The State plans on filing a motion for pretrial detention against Gutierrez.

Murder has a sentencing range from a minimum of 30 years up to life imprisonment; the crimes of possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a handgun each carry a sentencing range of 5 to 10 years in State Prison.
