U.S. Rep. Nellie Pou (D-9) has announced a $125,000 federal grant for the Kearny Prevention Coalition Drug-Free Communities Support Project made possible via the U.S. Centers for Disease Control’s Drug-Free Communities Support Program.

“Preventing substance use starts with strong communities and making sure our young people have the support they need,” the congresswoman said in a statement.
“This $125,000 federal award will help the Kearny Prevention Coalition continue its vital work with young people and families. I am proud to have helped secure this funding and will keep fighting to bring federal dollars home to Kearny and communities across our district.”
The grant is a continuation of federal support for the program, whose current project period runs through September 2027.
The Drug-Free Communities Support Program provides federal funding to community coalitions working to prevent and reduce substance use among young Americans. This award is administered by the CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control.
“Fighting drug dependence and abuse is one of the most important responsibilities of government and a team effort. Federal support like this is critical. I thank Congresswoman Pou for helping secure this money for Kearny,” added Kearny Mayor Carol Jean Doyle.
Last month, Pou teamed up with U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez (D-8) to deliver $3 million in federal funding for roadway safety improvements in Kearny, East Newark, and Harrison, as HCV first reported.
