Yesterday approximately at 7:23 p.m., the Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to 35 East 31st Street on a report of smoke. Arriving companies found a working fire on the 2nd floor of the three-story multi-unit residence, Weaver said in a statement.

Firefighters used two hand lines to extinguish the blaze, which was brought under control at 7:52 p.m. One adult and two children were transported to a local hospital for smoke inhalation.

Firefighters were able to rescue four newborn kittens from the fire apartment. A fire investigation is underway to determine cause.

A total of 13 occupants have been temporarily displaced and are under the care of the Bayonne Office of Emergency Management and the Red Cross, Weaver added.
