“On October 23rd, 2017, our beloved Sgt. Alexander Vazquez succumbed to his injuries. When he passed, the men and women of the North Bergen Police Department lost a mentor, a friend, and a leader,” the GoFundMe page description reads.

“Sgt. Vazquez’s smile, gentle demeanor, and easy-going nature made friends wherever he went. He earned the respect of the officers under his command by leading through example, treating them as friends rather than subordinates, and always being willing to listen. He was adored equally by his peers as well as those that met him through the day to day grind of policing.”

The post goes on to say that Vazquez is survived by his wife Natalie, as well as his four children: Kayla, 11, Gabriel, 4, Logan, 2, and Alex, 1.

“In an effort to establish a scholarship fund to support his children, we ask you to give what you can to ensure that his children may succeed as best they can despite the void left by the loss of Sgt. Vazquez.”

The page has a goal of $20,000 and has already raised $10,320 since early this afternoon.

Vazquez was in critical condition after a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday and succumbed to his injuries last night.
