Prosecutor: 2nd man arrested in North Carolina for November fatal shooting in Jersey City

A second man was arrested in North Carolina for a November fatal shooting in Jersey City, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

Yesterday, Damean Bates, 33, of West Orange, was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, in connection with the fatal shooting of Ishamell McCany on November 13th in Jersey City, Suarez said in a statement.

Bates was arrested at approximately 2:05 p.m by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Eastern District of North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force after members of their New York/New Jersey task force learned of Bates’ location.

He is charged with attempted murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He remains in custody in North Carolina awaiting extradition to New Jersey.

On Saturday, November 13th, shortly after 4:00 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department responded to the area of Grant Avenue and Martin Luther King Drive after hearing gunshots.

Responding officers found a male victim with a gunshot wound to the torso.

The victim, later identified as Ishamell McCany, 41, of Jersey City, was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 4:20 a.m.

A second defendant in the case, Anthony King, 35, of Jersey City, was arrested by the United States Marshals Service Eastern District of North Carolina Regional Fugitive Task Force on Thursday, January 13th.

King is charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. He is currently detained at the Hudson County Correctional Facility.
