In a letter to the editor, Bayonne 1st Ward Councilman Neil Carroll gives his take on why the time is now to unite for affordable housing in the Peninsula City.
Today, as we reflect on the outcome of the recent presidential election, our nation stands at a pivotal moment.
While elections can sometimes magnify our differences, they also highlight our shared values and collective goals. Now, more than ever, we must move forward together, united in purpose and action.
One of the most pressing issues we face is the growing shortage of affordable workforce housing. This crisis affects hardworking families across the country and is particularly acute here in New Jersey.
From veterans who have served our nation, to teachers shaping the next generation, to police officers and firefighters protecting our communities, many essential workers are struggling to find affordable housing near their places of employment.
The issue is not merely local—it is a national emergency, with countless families crying out for relief and stability.
In New Jersey, this challenge is deeply felt. The state’s Fourth Round of affordable housing obligations underscores the urgency of this crisis. Bayonne is one such city facing this crisis.
After community canvasing and close attention to those speaking at public meetings, it is obvious we need our representatives to join the cause. Proposals are just that until legislators make them law.
In that light and as a consistent advocate for working families, I have introduced several key proposals, including:
Modern Rent Control Policies: Exploring innovative approaches to ensure fairness and affordability for both tenants and landlords.
Government Oversight of Developers: Implementing stricter regulations to ensure that new developments include affordable housing components.
Workforce Housing Designations: Highlighting housing projects that directly benefit essential workers such as teachers, veterans, and first responders.
Additionally, I am proud to share that Hudson County has established its first-ever Affordable Housing Task Force, a milestone in our collective fight for equitable housing solutions.
I urge our County, State, and Federal representatives to join us in Bayonne and Hudson County in addressing this critical issue. The time for action is now.
As President John F. Kennedy once said, “If not us, who? If not now, when?” When it comes to helping our hardworking friends and neighbors keep a roof over their heads, there can be no justification for delay.
Affordable housing is not just a policy issue—it is a matter of human dignity. By addressing this crisis, we can create stronger, more resilient communities and ensure that every individual has access to safe, affordable housing.
Let’s move forward together with unity and a clear purpose to build a more equitable future for all.
For those representatives who claim to support affordability but have yet to act, I say this: We cannot wait any longer. The need is urgent, the outcry is loud, and the time to act is now.
