“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating the fatal shooting of a man in the area of Summit Avenue and Poplar Street. More to follow,” the HCPO tweeted early this morning.

Additional details of the murder were not immediately available, but this marks the second killing in Jersey City in less than a week, with a 35-year-old third grade teacher gunned down by her husband in a domestic violence incident on January 24th.

At 11:46 a.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released more information.

At approximately 9:35 p.m. on Sunday, the Jersey City Police Department received a report of shots fired in the area of Summit Avenue and Poplar Street in Jersey City.

Upon arrival, responding officers located a victim — later identified as Rafael Gomez, 25, of Jersey City — in the area of 1143 Summit Ave. with an apparent gunshot wound(s) to the torso.

He was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:09 p.m. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The HCPO Homicide Unit and the JCPD are actively investigating this case. No arrests have been made at this time.
