The Hoboken City Council will vote at Wednesday’s meeting on forming an exploratory commission to review a potential winter wonderland concept that includes an ice skating rink at Pier A Park.

The resolution, sponsored by 1st Ward Councilman Paul Presinzano and 2nd Ward Councilwoman Tiffanie Fisher, calls for a five-person panel to decide on the feasibility of holiday-themed kiosks, decorations, and an ice skating rink at Pier A in the winter.
The commission would consist of three people selected by the council, one by the mayor, and one by the Hoboken Business Alliance.
” … This commission shall collaborate with city officials, local business representatives, community leaders, and residents to explore potential funding sources, partnerships, and logistical considerations to bring this vision to life,” the resolution says.
” … The commission shall present its findings and recommendations to the City Council by [a date to be determined], ensuring ample time for planning and implementation.”
Presinzano said the concept is something he has considered for quite a while, given what is happening across the river in Bryant Park, and he feels that this could be a win across the board for Hobokenites.
“I’ve been looking at this for a long time: Pier A is underutilized in the winter and I look at Bryant Park all the time, but we’ve got the best view in the world,” he said over the phone.
“So I thought ‘what can we do to help businesses and bring families together in Hoboken – to make Hoboken, particularly the 1st Ward, a destination that’s something special.’”
Fisher added that they would model the ice skating rink after Ice at Santa Monica in California, which had it’s grand opening on November 8th.
The Hoboken City Council will convene Wednesday at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 94 Washington St., with the meeting streaming live on the city’s YouTube page.
