The new officers, who graduated from the Hudson County Police Academy last week are Stephen Chowanec, Vincent Guastini Jr., Ahmed Makshat, Donovan Ortiz, Mario Rodriguez, and David Smentkowski.

“I want to thank not only the new officers, but also their families, for their commitment and the sacrifices they’ll no doubt be making as they begin this important new chapter,” Mayor Ravi Bhalla said in a statement.

“These six new officers will play an important role in making Hoboken an even safer city to live and work, and I am proud to welcome them to our team.”

After being sworn-in, the six officers will take part in four months of field training before being assigned to the Hoboken Police Department’s Uniform Patrol Bureau which responds to approximately 100,000 calls a year.

The Hoboken City Council is expected to approve an increase in the HPD’s Table of Organization from 146 to 156 at their next meeting on Wednesday, December 18th, as HCV first reported last month.

Additionally, the latest firefighters, Brandon Lui, Raphael Maldonado, Domenico Lisa, Nyjon Freeman, Elias Colon III, Adrian Cepeda Jr., Adrian Pietri, and Todd Perkins will begin in-service training later this week, upon completion of the Passaic County Fire Academy.

The hiring of the eight firefighters will allow the department to increase its minimum staffing level from 20 to 22 firefighters on duty at all times, guaranteeing four members (including one Captain) on all engines responding to fire calls.

“The addition of these brave and dedicated Hoboken residents will significantly strengthen public safety across the City. Today, we reaffirm our commitment to providing the Fire Department with the resources needed to keep our community as safe as possible,” noted Public Safety Director Kenneth Ferrante.

“These young men have already proven they have what it takes to help keep Hoboken safe and I am excited to see their careers flourish, as they officially join our ranks today. This class helps us ensure not only the protection of our residents, but also that every firefighter returns home safely each day,” added Fire Chief Anton Peskens.
