According to city spokesman Joe Ryan, parking meters remain operational through two other payment methods: coins and the mobile parking app.

The city is currently evaluating the most cost-effective software upgrade options, in consultation with the meter manufacturer and other affected communities experiencing similar issues.

Due to the nature of the required system upgrades, Ryan said the matter will require additional time to resolve adequately.

To help inform the public, the Parking Utility will soon be placing stickers on meters advising drivers to avoid using credit cards at this time, with the matter set to be addressed in “the most cost-effective manner” as soon as possible.

If motorists discover a Bayonne parking meter that is completely out of service, he said they should notify the Parking Utility by calling 201-858-6061.
