Yesterday, at approximately 10:00 a.m., the West New York Police Department received a report of suspected human remains being recovered in the cliff area near Hillside Road (formerly Anthony M. Defino Way) in West New York, Suarez said in a statement.

The remains were found in a plastic bag by workers from a landscaping company that was
contracted by West New York to clean the area. Responding officers confirmed the finding and contacted the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit, authorities said.

The prosecutor’s office is actively investigating this case with the help of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office and West New York Police Department, officials said.

The preliminary investigation has confirmed that these were human remains, but at this time, the remains have not been identified. Additionally, at this stage of the investigation, it is also unclear how long the remains have been there.

Investigators are seeking the public’s assistance and are urging anyone with information about this incident or anyone who remembers seeing something suspicious in this area to contact the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit at 201-915-1345 or leave an anonymous tip on the Prosecutor’s website at http://www.hudsoncountyprosecutorsofficenj.org/homicide-tip/.

All information will be kept confidential.
