Authorities are investigating a fatal Jersey City shooting near Monticello Avenue and Astor Place that occurred early this morning.

“The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are investigating a shooting in the area of Monticello Avenue and Astor Place in which one person has died. More to follow,” the HCPO tweeted.

Another victim was also shot and is being treated at the Jersey City Medical Center for his injuries, according to police radio transmissions.

At 1:04 p.m., Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez released more information.

This morning, at approximately 3:02 a.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of shots fired in the area of Monticello Avenue and Astor Place, Suarez said in a statement.

Responding officers located two victims: a 46-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound to the middle body and a 49-year-old man with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body.

Both victims were transported to the Jersey City Medical Center and Keshean Nettles, 46, of Jersey City, was pronounced dead at approximately 3:35 a.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office. The 49-year-old victim, a Jersey City resident, remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The HCPO Homicide Unit and JCPD are actively investigating this case and no arrests have been made at this time.
