Two New York teens were caught breaking into cars in Bayonne on New Year’s Eve, with one of them attempting to flee the scene before being arrested, police said.

The two teens, one 17, from Brooklyn, New York and the other 14, from New York, New York, were both charged with two counts of burglary, two counts of theft, one count of possession of burglar’s tools, according to Police Lt. Eric Amato.
Additionally, the 14-year-old was charged with obstructing a governmental function, authorities said.
The duo was taken into custody around 1:06 a.m., near the intersection of 6th Street and Newman Avenue, on New Year’s Eve. Officers responded to the area on a report of two individuals observed checking car door handles in an attempt to gain entry, officials said.
A description of the actors was relayed to police dispatch by the caller and dispatch
broadcasted the description to all available units. Officers arrived to the area and observed the two teens who fit the description, police said.
As officers conducted a field check of the juveniles, the 14-year-old fled from the officers and a foot pursuit ensued. Officers were able to subdue the juvenile on 5th Street and Avenue C and placed him into custody, authorities said.
A search incident to custody led to the recovery of personal property removed from a vehicle belonging to a resident of Newman Avenue. While on Newman Avenue, officers were able to locate a 2018 Subaru and a 2008 Mazda that appeared to have been ransacked, officials said.
The victims were notified and confirmed that entry was made to their vehicles and contents removed. The 17-year-old was also placed into custody and a search incident to custody led to the recovery of burglar’s tools from her person, police said.
Also in the possession of the 14-year-old was a tote bag containing various items of personal property from the two vehicles, authorities said.
