Seven first responders were injured and 25 people were displaced by a three-alarm Jersey City fire at two adjoining residential buildings on Bergen Avenue.

At approximately 12:45 p.m. yesterday, the Jersey City Fire Department responded to a call for a working fire at 662 and 664 Bergen Ave.

While working to extinguish the fire, seven first responders, both police officers and firefighters, suffered mostly heat-related injuries, according to city spokeswoman Kimberly Wallace-Scalcione.

They were all released from the hospital, except for one first responder who suffered burns and has been taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in Livingston.

A total of 25 civilians have been displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross and both buildings suffered heavy damage.

The Freedom News TV video embedded above shows some of the challenges those battling the blaze encountered.

  1. So sad that the firefighter that was burned was treated and released by the medical center and then drove himself to The Saint Barnabas Burn Centet for further treatment. Way to go FDJC another member mistreated after getting hurt doing their job. The FDJC has made a habit of not taking care of their own. 1 member is still in the medical center.Time for the word to get out. Start asking some questions, starting with the director and the chief of dept.
