1 arrested, 1 at large for fatal shooting of 19-year-old Jersey City man

One man has been arrested and another is at large in the daytime murder of a 19-year-old Jersey City man yesterday, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

Yesterday at approximately 11:45 a.m., Jersey City police responded to the area of Garfield Avenue and Union Street on a report of shots fired. Officers also then responded to Jersey City Medical Center after being notified of the arrival of a gunshot victim, police said.

The victim, DaJour Riley, 19, of Jersey City, was shot multiple times inside a vehicle near the aforementioned intersection. He was transported privately to the JCMC and was pronounced dead at at approximately 2:30 p.m., authorities said.

Vernell Mohammed,19, of Jersey City was arrested and charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a firearm in violation, Suarez said in a statement.

A second suspect is currently wanted in connection with the fatality. Dashawn Mixson, 20,of Jersey City, has been charged with the exact same crimes as Mohammed, police said.

Mixson should not be approached and he should be considered armed and dangerous.

The Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit is actively investigating the case with assistance from the Jersey City Police Department.
