“On February 1, ICE conducted a targeted immigration enforcement operation in Jersey City, New Jersey, to arrest ten illegal aliens including multiple illegal aliens who committed felonies by illegally re-entering the U.S.,” U.S. Department of Homeland Assistant Security Tricia McLaughlin, who serves as a spokeswoman for ICE, said in an email.

“All ten illegal aliens will remain in ICE custody pending removal. Under President Trump and Secretary Noem, if you break the law, you will face the consequences. Criminal illegal aliens are not welcome in the U.S.”

She also asserted that the Jersey City Police Department was notified of “the targeted immigration enforcement operation,” as well as that none of the arrests occurred in Hoboken.

Jersey City spokesman Nathaniel Styer said in response that “I can 100% confirm JCPD was not notified.”

An early Sunday afternoon Nixle alert from Hoboken Mayor Emily Jabbour said in a Nixle alert that “several individuals” were apprehended in the Jersey City Heights, specifically the 9th Street Light Rail Station right on the Mile Square City border, as HCV first reported.

“Upon learning of the situation, Councilman Joe Quintero and I went directly to the area near the 9th Street Light Rail Station, where we spoke to multiple witnesses who confirmed they saw unmarked vehicles and several individuals being apprehended from the light rail train and in the area of the station,” she said at the time.

She reaffirmed that Hoboken supports all residents, regardless of immigration status, and roughly 150 people came out for a community meeting regarding ICE just hours later at St. Matthew’s Trinity Center at 731 Washington St.

Jersey City Mayor James Solomon, who signed an executive order last month bolstering their sanctuary city status, again came out strong against ICE after the arrests took place.

“To our immigrant neighbors: You do not have to open your door without a warrant signed by a judge. You have the right to remain silent. You have the right to a lawyer. Do not sign anything you do not understand … Jersey City is America’s Golden Door. We will fight to keep it open.”

Two videos from the aforementioned incident went viral: One posted by HCV where a man was detained by a single ICE agent and another posted by Jersey City Ward D Councilman Jake Ephros where the same agent tells him “we don’t need a warrant, bro.”

Hoboken, Jersey City, Newark, and Paterson are all defendants in a federal lawsuit filed by the U.S. Department of Justice, who are challenging the legality of their sanctuary city status.
