“I am endorsing the Education Matters team for Jersey City Board of Education and am asking all of my constituents to go out and vote for these individuals because they are the team that will help fight for the resources and programs we need so that our students can continue to better themselves and stay on the right path,” Walker said in a statement.
He and his colleague, Aponte-Lipski, both gave their endorsements in person at a fundraiser for the Education Matters team, which consists of Trustee Natalia Ioffe, Ahmed Kheir, and Melany Cruz Burgos, last week.
They join two other county officials in backing the preferred candidates of the Jersey City Education Association (JCEA): County Executive Craig Guy, also the chair of the county Democrats, and County Commissioner Bill O’Dea (D-2), a declared candidate for mayor.
“We are grateful to have the backing of Hudson County Commissioners Yraida Aponte-Lipski & Jerry Walker. Commissioner Aponte-Lipski has been a staunch advocate for affordability and infrastructure improvements as well as fighting for other quality of life issues for her constituents,” Education Matters Campaign Manager and JCEA PAC Chair Mike Greco.
“Commissioner Walker’s legacy of fighting for more opportunities for our Jersey City youth to succeed through his nonprofit; Team Walker is second to none here in Jersey City and our candidates pledge to strive to mirror this hard work & dedication if elected to the Jersey City Board of Education.”
The race features seven candidates vying for three, three-year terms on the volunteer board.
The “For Stronger Schools” team of Matt Schneider and Tia Rezabala has the support of two other mayoral candidates: Ward E Councilman James Solomon and Council President Joyce Watterman.
There are also two independents in the race: Sumit “Sam” Salia and Miriam Tawfiles.
