The West New York Board of Education voted unanimously (8-0) to appoint Sandra Pfiel last week after the New Jersey School Ethics Commission removed Trustee Ismail Dalia for not filing a financial disclosure form on November 30th.

“I am excited about the opportunity to work with the school board members in West New York. I previously worked in the district in various capacities, most recently as a paraprofessional,” Pfiel told HCV in an email.

“Both of my parents are retired West New York educators with over 45 years of experience combined. With my son enrolled in the district’s early childhood program, I think that I will bring a unique perspective to the board as we collaborate together for the kids of West New York.”

Pfiel was the only candidate considered at the regularly scheduled BOE meeting at their middle school, located at 201 57th St., on Wednesday, December 7th.

Ismail Dalia, who was appointed in January 2021 and then elected the following April, was removed late last month following a decision from NJ SEC Chair Robert Bender, as HCV first reported.

Given the circumstances, West New York voters will now have the chance to elect four trustees in April, rather than three. Pfiel did not respond to a question asking if she planned on seeking a full three-year term in the spring.

President Adam Parkinson, Vice President David Morel, and Trustee Marielka Diaz all have terms that expire at the end of this year.
