Video: North Bergen cops arrest 3 armed robbery suspects, recover 5 handguns

A video has surfaced showing North Bergen police arresting 3 armed robbery suspects near 1408 43rd Street yesterday, with the department confirming they have also recovered five handguns and relatively small amounts of marijuana from the scene.

The above video comes courtesy of YouTube user Joe Lepore, who, in the video, praises the North Bergen police for not firing a shot en route to apprehending the suspects.

Hudson County View was the first media outlet to provide video of police investigating the incident yesterday.

According to Police Sgt. Bronson Jusino, officers responded to a call of a robbery at a home on 43rd Street at 11 a.m. and observed two males running from the scene when they arrived.

After a short foot pursuit the officers apprehended one 17-year-old male juvenile and Jonathan Lindsay, 21, of Paterson, officials said.

Lindsay was holding a black .40 caliber handgun when apprehended by police, who had to be tackled to the ground by an officer as was running away, authorities said.

Lindsay was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of a weapon, burglary, employing a juvenile in commission of a crime, aggravated assault and possession of a controlled dangerous substance (marijuana) under 50 grams, officials said.

His cash bail was set at $150,000 by Hudson County Superior Court Judge Joseph Isabella.

The victim had several friends spending the night at his home, who were woken up by the actors trying to break in from the front door and the rear sliding glass door, police said.

The actors then broke a glass window in the back of the home before running through the house demanding money and drugs, authorities said. Based on the victim’s report, the actors stole some marijuana, officials said

While processing the scene, it was discovered that the actors fired at least two gun shots inside the home.
Police recovered two .40 caliber handguns and a 9mm Uzi. The victim did not suffer any injuries and the Juvenile was remanded to the juvenile facility, authorities said.

During the investigation, detectives recovered a large plastic sealed bag containing over 50 grams of marijuana and several bottles of codeine cough syrup, police said.

Detectives recovered a Khar .380 handgun and a Smith and Wesson, model 57, .41 magnum revolver. One of the victims admitted these items were his, officials said.

Jovan Sanabia, of Elizabeth, was then charged with two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a controlled dangerous substance (marijuana), over 50 grams, possession of a controlled dangerous substance (codeine), two counts of manufacturing to distribute, hindering apprehension and providing a false name, authorities said.

His cash bail was set at $7,5000 full by Hudson Superior Court Judge Joseph Isabella.

Additionally, the juvenile from Paterson was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, unlawful possession of a weapon, burglary, aggravated assault and possession of a controlled dangerous substance under 50 grams.

Jusino added that the the victims were all between the ages 21 and 27. Based on their statements to police, they feel at least one of the actors is friends of a person that was staying there.Furthermore, victims believe they were targeted by an associate.

North Bergen police are still investigating who orchestrated the robbery.

  1. Itn’t it a shame when you have to “commend the police” for not firing there weapons. Lepore, if there was no need to fire there weapons why do you feel the need to commend them?

    • I guess you’ve been under a rock Angelo. Officers have been firing their weapons without justification, especially towards minorities, for years now. So when an officer actually does his job correctly, they should be commended for every aspect of it, due to the intensity of the job and high risk nature of the field. Oh and btw, the “actors” had guns. Perpetrators have been shot for less.
