“Troy Street lost a pump. Veolia has people en route to reset it. Once that pump is reset, full pressure will be restored. My council office is monitoring the situation and will update as soon as we get more information,” Ward D Councilman Yousef Saleh wrote on Facebook Friday evening.

“Troy Street is the large storage tank that was built years ago to assist the Heights in getting better pressure and water availability. On a very rare occasion we lose a pump, I’ve been informed that it needs to be reset electrically and we will be up and running.”

Subsequently, Veolia issued a boil water advisory until further notice, indicating that local officials and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) had been immediately notified.

“This affects customers in the Jersey City Heights area: North of Route 139; east of Tonnele Avenue; south of Secaucus Road and 5th Street; and south and west of Paterson Plank Road, Ogden Avenue and Palisades Avenue,” their notice says.

“Customers are ordered to boil their water for one minute for the following uses: drinking, cooking, baking, washing dishes, making ice cubes, taking medications, brushing teeth, washing food, mixing juices or drinks, feeding pets or other consumption. Water does not have to be boiled for showering or washing clothes.”

They continued that emergency crews will collect water samples that will be submitted to the NJDEP for review, who will then make the decision whether or not to lift the boil water advisory, a process that typically takes 24 to 48 hours notice.
