Prosecutor: Jersey City man arrested for fatally shooting cousin on Bidwell Avenue

A Jersey City man has been arrested for fatally shooting his cousin outside of 199 Bidwell Ave. late Tuesday evening, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

Tavon Rush, 35, of Jersey City, was arrested without incident earlier today and was charged with aggravated manslaughter, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon and certain persons not to possess a weapon, Suarez said in a statement.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and Jersey City Police Department detained Rush in connection with the shooting death of Darrell Rush on June 26. Tavon Rush and Darrell Rush are believed to cousins, police said.

Tavon Rush is tentatively scheduled to make his first appearance tomorrow, June 30, in Criminal Justice Reform Court in the Hudson County Administration Building located at 595 Newark Ave. in Jersey City.

Tuesday around 11:25 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department received a report of gunshots in the area of Martin Luther King Drive and Bidwell Avenue, officials said.

Upon arrival, responding Police Officers found a male victim in the street near 199 Bidwell Ave. The victim was later identified as Darrell Rush, 31, of Jersey City, authorities said.

He was found in a lifeless condition with an apparent gunshot wound to his head. Rush was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 11:40 p.m., police said.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has declared the Cause of Death to be a gunshot wound to the head and the Manner of Death to be Homicide.
