Prosecutor: Investigation of fatal Jersey City incident where driver shot in neck

Authorities are investigating a fatal Jersey City incident where a man was shot in the neck while driving a car, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

Shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday, the Jersey City Police Department was notified of a motor vehicle crash in the area of Old Bergen Road and Merritt Street, Suarez said in a statement.

Responding officers located an unresponsive man in the driver’s seat of a vehicle that had crashed into a tree on Merritt Street. The unresponsive man – later identified as Devon Reid, 39, of Elizabeth – was discovered with a gunshot wound to the neck.

Reid was transported by Emergency Medical Services to the Jersey City Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 7:16 p.m.

The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.

The HCPO Homicide Unit and the Jersey City Police Department are actively investigating this matter and no arrests have been made at this time.
