Alaa Awad, 29, of Paterson, was charged with driving while intoxicated at around 3:15 a.m. this morning, according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo.
Port Authority police were at the intersection of 12th Street and Marin Boulevard in Jersey City where he saw Awad driving a 2009 Nissan Maxima, authorities said.
Awad made an illegal turn, disobeying a sign and the traffic light, so an officer followed directly behind the vehicle as it approached the Holland Tunnel, officials said.
The vehicle was weaving and crossing over the double solid line, so the officer stopped Awad near the Holland Tunnel entrance, police said.
As the officer interviewed the suspect, he noticed a strong odor of alcohol on the suspect’s breath, as well as the fact that eyes were red and glassy and that his speech was slow and slurred, authorities said.
The officer also noticed an open, partially consumers bottle of Jack Daniels on the floor of the driver’s compartment, officials said.
Awad volunteered he was coming from the Reign Nightclub in Hoboken, where he had had a few drinks. He failed field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer test, so he was placed under arrest and his vehicle was impounded, police said.
