The grandfather, 68, of Secaucus, is charged with endangering the welfare of a child and simple assault, Miller said in a statement, and his name is not being released to protect the identity of the minor.

The incident occurred yesterday at Walmart, 400 Park Plaza Dr., around 9:40 a.m. and police received a call indicating that a man struck a toddler in the head.

Responding to an email from HCV, Miller indicated that the grandson is 3 years old and had a minor cut/scratch along his face and neck from being hit.

The grandfather was issued a complaint summons for the aforementioned charges before being released from police custody, authorities said.

  1. Discipline is not striking your children. In this case your grandchild. I’ve yet to understand why we teach our children in toddler stage to keep their hands to themselves and definitely not hit others. Then as adults in charge, we hit the child. Makes no sense. Our children are most precious. I always said that all children make mistakes and bad decisions but they are children. These are learning moments for adults in charge to take advantage of. We as adults are also not perfect. And certainly hitting your grandson in the head or face is not even close to ok. That grandparent needs anger counseling because it’s never what the child did. Adults like this are angry and unhappy with their own lives.

  2. It’s discipline. He lightly hit the child… That’s how you keep your children in line you didn’t hear him screaming and abusing the child. You heard that he gave him a little tap on the head. This is the problem with society today is that we are supposed to excuse bad behavior from children. Parents have no leg to stand on. They just take their bratty children everywhere and there’s no repercussions except for to all of the patrons that have to deal with it.

  3. So let me ask everyone out here leaving terrible comments on Grandpa! If he were to no discipline at all you would all say why isn’t he saying nor doing anything? Correct? But he’s responsible for that child! So if he gets hurt on his watch or gets taken it’s neglect! The man don’t win either way…. So I don’t get it…. He didn’t beat the child he did 1 small tap that’s not abuse! This is why children today have no respect for ANYONE ANYMORE! Because no one can reprimand children people! Stop this madness! We need to start caring about the children who are really suffering and being trafficked and abused in this country not a grandparent or parent who is disciplining a child! Very sad and shameful world we are raising children in today!
