Police: Elizabeth man spits at Hoboken cops after creating a scene at public library

An Elizabeth man was arrested for spitting at Hoboken police officers after he resisted arrest for creating a scene at the public library, authorities said.

Hakeem Lawrence, 34, of Elizabeth, was charged with throwing bodily fluids, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct on Monday, according to Police Det. Lt. Jonathan Mecka.

On December 12th at approximately 5 p.m., Hoboken police responded to an incident at the Hoboken Public Library, located at 500 Park Ave., where Lawrence was throwing items at people while yelling towards them within the library.

Officers responded and stopped him in the area. While talking to him, he spit on the responding officers. He was arrested and charged accordingly.

Additionally, while Officers were arresting him another man, Michael Azor, attempted to intervene. As a result, he was placed under arrest for obstruction. Azor’s charge was placed on a summons and Lawrence’s charges were placed on a warrant.

Lawrence was then transported to Hudson County Correctional Facility after the arrest process, police said.
