Edward Phillips, 45, of Belleville, was charged with shoplifting, exhibiting false documents, and hindering apprehension, according to Police Lt. Eric Amato.

Phillips was taken into custody at roughly 5:46 p.m. Friday, from the area of Route 440 and 30th Street, after matching the description of an actor wanted for shoplifting $40.46 worth of merchandise from TJ Maxx moments earlier, officials said.

During the on-scene investigation, Phillips was positively identified as the actor and placed under arrest.

During the arrest process, Phillips provided “false pedigree information” in an effort to hinder his own apprehension, as well as  false identification to the arresting officers, leading to additional charges, authorities said.
