Bill A-1476, also sponsored by Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak (D-18), creates a 13-member commission dedicated to crafting a comprehensive strategy aimed at enhancing traffic safety and reducing fatalities.

This mandate includes advising key stakeholders such as the Governor, Legislature, and Department of Transportation (DOT) on policies, programs, research, and priorities. The ultimate objective is to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2040.

“Establishing a New Jersey Target Zero Commission will provide the framework needed to develop a comprehensive strategy. Our aim is clear: to significantly reduce traffic fatalities and accidents, fostering safer roads for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike,” Allen said in a statement.

“I remain steadfast in my commitment to seeing this legislation through. We should also aim to mirror Hoboken’s Vision Zero plan throughout our State in which for the past seven years there have been zero fatalities.”

The commission seeks to craft a meticulously coordinated and comprehensive action plan to realize the ambitious goals outlined in the legislation.

Assemblyman William Spearman (D-5), along with Assemblywomen Yvonne Lopez (D-19), Shanique Speight (D-29), and Lisa Swain (D-38) have signed on as co-sponsors.

The New Jersey Senate Transportation Committee advanced the Senate version of the bill sponsored by Patrick Diegnan (D-18) and Raj Mukherji (D-32) back in February.
