Khaliff Harper, 30, of Bayonne, was charged with eluding and obstructing a governmental function, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Harper was taken into custody at 11:15 p.m. last night from the area of Andrew Street.

As officers attempted to stop the vehicle he was operating, he refused to comply and initiated a pursuit which resulted in his vehicle crashing into a light pole on 17th Street and Broadway.

Harper then exited and began fleeing the scene on foot but was apprehended a short time later in the backyard of a residence located on Andrew Street, authorities said.
