Police: Bayonne man caught with handgun, ammo, & prescription drugs due to traffic stop

A Bayonne man was caught with a handgun, ammunition, and prescription drugs due to a traffic stop yesterday afternoon, police said.

Lionel N. Peterson, 24, of Bayonne, possession of a firearm (committing a drug offense),
possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a handgun, possession of hollow point bullets, possession of hollow point bullets with intent to distribute, possession of a controlled dangerous substance (also within 500 feet of public housing and within 1,000 feet of a school), and possession of narcotics paraphernalia, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Peterson was taken into custody at at about 12:12 yesterday from the area of the rear lot of 583 Avenue C. Detectives in the area of 18th Street and Avenue C observed a vehicle, later determined to be operated by Peterson, commit numerous traffic violations.

The detectives followed the vehicle and conducted a motor vehicle stop in the rear lot of 583 Avenue C. During the investigation, detectives observed a bottle of a liquid prescription legend drug bearing no label.

As the investigation continued, narcotic paraphernalia, an additional bottle of the same prescription drug, and a .38 caliber semiautomatic handgun loaded with seven rounds.

Six hollow point bullets and one full metal jacket bullet were also recovered from the vehicle, authorities said.
