Police: Bayonne man, 34, arrested for Tuesday evening shots fired incident

A 34-year-old Bayonne man has been arrested for a Tuesday evening shots fired incident where no one was injured, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Willard Maddox, 34, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault possession of a firearm for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a firearm, certain persons not to possess a firearm, obstructing a governmental function, and a contempt warrant out of East Orange, Amato said in a statement.

Maddox was taken into custody at about 9:45 p.m. last night from the area of West 16th Street and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. Officers responded to the area of West 19th Street on reports of shots fired.

Upon arrival, officers spoke to witnesses and broadcast a description of the shooter to all available units. Units were able to locate a man, later identified as Maddox, in the area of West 16th Street and JFK Boulevard who fled on foot as the officers approached him.

A brief foot pursuit ensued and Maddox was apprehended in the area and taken into custody.

The investigation revealed that Maddox fired several shots with a .22 caliber firearm in the direction of a group of individuals in the area of West 19th Street and JFK Boulevard.

Maddox was charged accordingly and additionally processed on an open warrant. No injuries were reported and the incident remains under investigation, authorities said.
