All three juveniles, 15, 15, and 16, respectively, of Queens, New York and Jersey City, were charged with burglary and obstructing a governmental function, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

The 16-year-old was also charged with resisting arrest and possession of burglar’s tools.

They were taken into custody at about 4:49 p.m. on Friday from the area of West 29th Street. Officers responded to a residence located on West 28th Street on a report of a burglary in progress to a vacant apartment.

Upon arrival, officers observed a man, later identified as the 16-year-old, who they referred to as Juvenile 3, climbing the fire escape of the building toward the roof who disregarded the officers’ commands to stop fleeing.

The officers also observed, through the window, another man inside the apartment. As officers pursued Juvenile 3, they observed him jumping to neighboring rooftops but he was ultimately intercepted and apprehended on the fire escape.

Juveniles 1 and 2 then emerged from the apartment onto the fire escape where they were also taken into custody.

The on-scene investigation led to the discovery of a broken rear window to the apartment caused by the juveniles and a search incident to Juvenile 3’s custody led to the recovery of two kitchen knives believed to be used to commit the burglary, authorities said.
