U.S. Rep. Rob Menendez (D-8), state Senator Raj Mukherji (D-32), and former Gov. Jim McGreevey honored Venus Xtravaganza and the Pellagatti family at an event at Six26 during Jersey City Pride this past weekend.

“Venus’ story is one of bravery and brilliance, but also of injustice that we must never forget. By honoring her family here in Jersey City, we celebrate the legacy of a daughter of this community whose life continues to inspire,” Menendez said in a statement.
“And by investing in trans-led services, we’re making sure future generations have the safety, dignity, and opportunity that Venus was denied.”
He and Mukherji both issued proclamations as they joined Hudson Pride and Garden State Equality during Jersey City Pride to celebrate Xtravaganza’s legacy and the families who continue to keep her memory alive.
The recognition comes as Mukherji successfully secured a $400,000 line item in this year’s state budget to support trans-led housing and health initiatives, bringing the total funding to $800,000 in just two years.
This is the largest dedicated state investment in New Jersey history for the trans community, Garden State Equality announced today.
“Securing this historic investment for the trans community is not just about dollars, it’s about recognizing lives, legacies, and futures,” Mukherji added.
“Honoring Venus’ chosen and biological families here today affirms that Jersey City is, and always will be, a place where trans voices and histories are uplifted.”
Back in July 2023, the Jersey City Council voted unanimously (6-0) to preserve the childhood home of Xtravaganza, the filming location of the 1990 documentary “Paris is Burning,” recognizing her as a trans icon during the 1980s.
“Jersey City has long been a home for those who dream of a more inclusive and compassionate world. Honoring Venus Xtravaganza and the families who loved her reminds us of our responsibility to ensure every young person has the freedom to live their truth safely and with pride,” noted McGreevey, who is openly gay and a mayoral candidate.
Garden State Equality Executive Director Christian Fuscarino emphasized the importance of community recognition.
“For too long, trans stories have been erased from our history books. Venus’ story is Jersey City’s story—a reminder of both the struggles and the brilliance of our LGBTQ+ family,” he asserted.
“Today’s recognition, paired with this historic investment thanks to Senator Mukherji’s leadership, is proof that New Jersey is moving forward in honoring and protecting our trans community.”
Jonovia Chase, of Venus House, expressed great gratitude as well.
“Now more than ever, we need leaders who believe in the full liberation of trans people — not just to survive, but to truly thrive. This historic recognition could not be more timely,” she asserted.
“We are proud to witness true justice for Venus Xtravaganza taking shape — not only in remembrance, but in action. Her legacy is being honored by investing in the lives of women and individuals of trans experience living in New Jersey today.”
